syntonic_comma @ 05:27 pm: Confidence
Date: Sat, 16 Jul 2011 23:47:12 +0300
From: Indrek Kanter <kantersieg@hot.ee>
Subject: Confidence

Dear Friend,

Did you know that there is a single component that separates people who are successful from people who are not? That component is confidence.  People who have confidence will take their dreams and make them come true because they will take immediate, massive, repeated action and will never quit until they make their dreams come true.
Hmmm, I'd say that same, single component separates a lot of people who are criminals from people who are not.
I'd describe a lot of bullies, stalkers, wife beaters, embezzlers, cult leaders, despots, and serial killers as confident. Confident that they are right; confident that their desires are more important than anyone else's; confident that they won't get caught. (This applies to a lot of sales(wo)men, politicians, and spammers, too.)
"immediate, massive, repeated action and will never quit"
Textbook Spousal Abuse.

Confidence without decency does not benefit society. (Wisdom and compassion wouldn't be bad either.)

syntonic_comma @ 03:12 pm: spamming for love
Date: Sat, 25 Jun 2011 19:33:35 +0530
From: Sadique <shlover143@gmail.com>
To: xxxxxxxx@yyyyyy.net
Subject: hi, need a help

My Self Sadique. i am 22 year old and i am student.
i love a girl very much, she is my classmate......
i made a page on facebook which is dedicate to her.....
on her birthday i want to give her surprise....
that is showing her a page of facebook which is dedicate only for her with "1 million likes"
If you ever love some one and believe in love..then plz like my page on facebook..
so that i can give the gift to my love..
Below is page link....
Just one question, Sadique — If you are a fine, upstanding, law-abiding person, how do you come to have my email address? How do you come to have a million email addresses to ask people to like your page?

It's rather sweet to do something over the top for your beloved, but this didn't come to me from a friend who supports your cause; this came from someone who shouldn't even know of my existence. (Someone who probably doesn't know of my existence, but who somehow has a pile of email addresses.) And that changes it from something good to something bad, in my (not-so-humble) opinion.

OK, more than one question. Why do you think I (or these other million targets) have a facebook account? Do you just assume "everyone" does? Facebook is all about marketing my personal data. I don't tell them what I like. I don't tell them where I work, nor how I spend my time. I don't even want to tell them who my friends are (but that kinda defeats the alleged purpose of their site, doesn't it?).

I haven't tried that link; Facebook is watching me. As much as it can, it's watching all of us....

Can i trust you?
Of course you can trust me. You can trust whomever you like. If you've got $3.8 million, you can do whatever you like.

The question is not can you trust me, but should you trust me. You don't even seem to know my name....

(And why would anyone need help to donate money? And can't you afford to pay someone to help you? Are you offering me a job?)

syntonic_comma @ 03:58 pm: lawyer spam
can of Hormel SpamAny idea why people send spam to find a lawyer?
Date: Mon, 30 May 2011 11:43:33 -0400
From: Kathy Waller <kwaller@xxxxx.org>
To: undisclosed-recipients: ;
Subject: Attorney Inquiry
I'm Steven Bessant[1] and I need a commercial litigation lawyer[2] to handle a collection matter,[3] I will also need a referral if this is not your line of practice.[4] Thank you as I look forward to your response soonest.Contact me via email (steven.bessant@live.com)

This message (including any attachments) is intended only for the use of the individual or entity to which it is addressed and may contain information that is non-public, proprietary, privileged, confidential, and exempt from disclosure under applicable law[5] or may constitute as attorney work product.[6] If you are not the intended recipient,[7] you are hereby notified that any use, dissemination, distribution, or copying of this communication is strictly prohibited.[8] If you have received this communication in error,[9] notify us immediately by telephone[10] and (i) destroy this message if a facsimile or (ii) delete this message immediately if this is an electronic communication. Thank you.
These people don't need lawyers; they need brains.
  1. So why does the header say "From: Kathy Waller"? Is she helping you look for a lawyer? Or are you exploiting a virus on her PC? (Her name and the email domain were enough for me to identify Kathy as a real person – where she works and what she does there. (Her profession's making a contribution to society, by the way. Not something I'd say about spamers.))
  2. You don't know my name, so why do you think I might be a commercial-litigation lawyer – or a lawyer at all? And where do you need a lawyer? If you don't know where I live, why do you think I can practice in the jurisdiction of your suit? (I live 750 miles from Kathy Waller – but spam knows no geographical boundaries.)
And if I were a lawyer, why would I want a client who's going to lie to me about his identity?
  3. Comma splice.
  4. If you don't know who I am, why would you trust a referral from me?
  5. If this information is "non-public, proprietary, privileged, confidential, and exempt from disclosure", why is it sent as spam?
  6. This message is potentially the product of some attorney's work? Somebody sets the "bar" pretty low.
  7. How am I to know whether I am the "intended recipient" when it is addressed to "undisclosed-recipients"? (And if there is only one intended recipient, why was it sent to plural recipients?)
  8. Prohibited by whom? If you don't want people to use, disseminate, distribute, or copy your spam, don't send it in the first place.
  9. If you sent it to me, how could I have received it in error? (The only error at my end is an inadequate spam filter.)
  10. How can I notify you by telephone if you don't give me your phone number? (I don't even trust that you gave me your real name, since you forged the sending address.) It would be worth calling you collect though (if I could identify you), just to put some of the cost of spam back on the sender. ☹

Geez, another one:

I'm Steven Bessant and I need a commercial litigation lawyer to handle a collection matter, I will also need a referral if this is not your line of practice. Thank you as I look forward to your response soonest. Contact me via my secure email (bessantsteven@yahoo.com)
"Steven", why are you using Paul's email account now? How many email accounts have you compromised? And what's so secure about Yahoo email? I guess it's more "secure" (i.e. readable) than an account that belongs to someone else. And you still haven't said where you are.

Do you think I am more likely to answer if you write from a different address? Why do you still think I am a lawyer?

I'm playing a video game League Of Legends and need your help!

Please use my referal link to create a new account.
You need to level it to level 5 (~6 matches) in order I get a bouns.

REFERAL LINK: http://signup.leagueoflegends.com/?ref=[no bonus for spammers.]

In response to spam, I'm supposed to visit a site I've never heard of and have no reason to trust, open an account (presumably giving up personal information to persons unknown), and play a game (that I've never heard of and have no interest in) enough to develop some proficiency? What's in it for me? Heck, what's in it for the spammer? What's this "bonus" worth?

There were 447 addresses on the "To:" list, all presumably total strangers to the sender. How many more messages like this did (s)he send, to how many other hundreds of strangers?

If you want help from a total stranger, you need to (a) introduce yourself and (b) explain why I should care. ((c) It also might help a lot if you explained how/why you have my email address.)

Please do not reply to this e-mail. Mail sent to this address cannot be answered.
You send me email about "my" account that I can't reply to?

I think I last flew Continental about 35 years ago, before I was a legal adult, so I don't even have a Continental account.

One big question, dear spammer: Where is Steubenville? Which state? (Or province? Or country?) There isn't a Steubenville in the state I live in. Do you even know what state I live in, or work in? And if you don't, why would you think I would want to rent an apartment in "Steubenville"?

would you like me to send you my pic?

Gee, I don't get much email saying I'm hot. I wonder where Boyd saw my picture? I wonder where he saw an earlier picture, to say I'm hotter now? I wonder what makes Boyd think I'm interested in boys? (It just doesn't seem like something you would assume about a total stranger.) I wonder whether Boyd even knows my gender? I wonder why Boyd didn't address the email to me in the "to" line?
